Upon preforming extensive web-based research, I have come to the conclusion that the internet can be defined as a global network of interconnected computer networks that allows for the exchange of information and enables communication. Th internet enables the sharing of data, resources, and services across geographical boundaries. Furthermore, it has become an integral part of modern life, impacting various aspects such as communication, education, business, entertainment, and more. The internet was founded on October 29, 1969, when computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time, becoming the first hosts on what would eventually become the internet. Additionally, the original Arpanet network was established between Harvard, MIT, and BBN in 1970. The Internet was primarily used for military and academic purposes, such as communicating messages and research. Furthermore, as it has evolved, the internet has become more accessible to the general public, leading to an uptake in its use for various purposes, such as social networking, education, and business.

Moreover, the World Wide Web can be defined as, “a system of interconnected public webpages accessible through the Internet” (MDN Web Docs). This interconnected system was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist in 1989. Originally, The Web was designed and built to address the demand for automated information sharing among scientists at universities and institutes around the world. The World Wide Web is now used to enable access to users to a vast amount of information on the internet including access to websites, search engines, multimedia content, and ability to participate in online activities.

Without prior knowledge on the subject, the terms “Internet” and “World Wide Web” are frequently used in an interchangeable manner. However, they refer to different concepts, despite the fact that they are interconnected and work side-by-side. The internet is an international network of connected computers that allows for the exchange of information, whereas the web is the term that refers to the collection of web pages you can access when your computer is online. Put simply, the internet is the system of interconnected computers that the web works on and relies on for connectivity.

The first website to be created was "http://info.cern.ch," which was initially launched by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991 and still exists today. This website contained information about the “World Wide Web Project” and launched at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN. The Website allowed for people to learn how to create webpages and gain further knowledge about hypertext, with the objective of making life and communication easier for society.

Previous to this discovery, a woman by the name Hedy Lamarr, who was a Hollywood actress and inventor in the 1940s, made the innovation of “frequency hopping”. This revolutionary discovery by Lamarr is still used in wireless communications such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth today. Due to her significance in the world of communications, there is a song dedicated to her by famous actor, Johnny Deep, called “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr”.

In relation to this, Jim Kardash from the corporation Intel came up with the name Bluetooth during a meeting between the three technology industry leaders. The meeting that took place in 1996 was to plan the standardization of short-range radio technology. This innovation would support connectivity and collaboration between different tech-based industries and products. Interestingly, the Bluetooth symbol is representative of a bind rune merging the Younger Futhark runes, symbolic of the initials of Harold Bluetooth, the Nordic Viking king in which Bluetooth was named after.

Additionally, Wi-Fi was developed by Vic Hayes in 1997. Hayes was the head of the committee that introduced the international standard for wireless networking and was therefore coined as the “Father of Wi-Fi”. The original name of Wi-Fi was “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence”, which proved difficult to pronounce, resulting in its name change.
